Fall at the Ranch
This fall we brought our cows down from summer pastures, trailing them down to the foothills, where they are grazing on new pastures. We are currently weaning calves from their mothers, utilizing a low-stress technique called fence-line weaning. In this practice, we sort the calves from the mothers, leaving the calves on one side of the fence and the mothers on the other side. They are still able to touch each other and make contact, so it lessens any stress the calf would go through in the separation. After about four days, we fully separate them.
This is when the calves receive the individual numbers we use to track their progress and health for the rest of their lives. We sort male from female offspring so we can manage them as they grow older. All calves get individually weighed so we can track performance and relate it back to the mother's performance.
We've already had two or three feet of snow this fall here at the ranch in the Gallagher Mountains, where the elevation is about 8,000 feet. The temperature's been in the 20s and 30s at night, 40s and 50s during the day, making for a pretty nice fall temperature level.
We've been catching up on little things here that we couldn't do during the growing season. We spend time covering our stockpile of feed so the weather doesn't affect the quality. We're also spending more time in the office catching up on the business side of the operation, along with continuing to check up on the health of the cows.
